Tragedy as 17 people killed in Burkina Faso restaurant attack

Burkina Faso gendarmes and army forces patrol on August 13, 2017 as soldiers launch an operation against suspected jihadists in Burkina Faso after gunmen attacked a cafe in the capital Ouagadougou

Seventeen people are dead after a restaurant in Burkina Faso's capital was attacked by gunmen.
Police said that "three or four" gunmen pulled up on motorbikes at the Aziz Istanbul restaurant in Ouagadougou at around 9.30pm on Sunday local time.

Then they started shooting at customers.
A witness reported seeing people running out of the restaurant as police and paramilitary forces surrounded it.
Three of the attackers were later killed by security forces, said Burkina Faso's communications minister Remis Dandjinou.
The police operation continued into the early hours of Monday and it is understood there are still hostages on the first and second floors of the building.
The victims were of several different nationalities, including at least one French citizen, Mr Dandjinou added.
A paramedic was also quoted as saying that another of the casualties was Turkish.
At least 12 people were injured in the attack.
Mr Dandjinou described the incident as a "terrorist attack", although no group has yet claimed to have been behind it.
Islamic extremists attacked another restaurant in Ouagadougou, which is in the centre of the West African country, in January last year, killing 30 people.
There has also been an increase in militant attacks along the northern border with Mali.
Burkina Faso is landlocked and is also one of the world's poorest nations.
