Nigeria - Two newly appointed members of the board of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other offences Commission (ICPC) Maimuna Aliyu and Sa’ad Alanamu, who were linked to an alleged N1 billion graft will resign their appointments, an unnamed source within the presidency has said.
“The two ICPC commissioners reported to be under investigation will be stepping down and won’t be members of the commission anymore,” the source said.
After their appointments were announced by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, the ICIR, an investigative website, had reported that the duo were currently being investigated by the ICPC, the same agency to whose board they were appointed.
Alanamu is being investigated on corruption charges allegedly committed when he was the head of some institutions in Kwara State.
Aliyu is also being probed for a case of abuse of office, misappropriation and diversion of public funds.
Osinbajo had approved the replacement of Nta Ekpo, chairman of the commission, with Bolaji Owasanoye, a professor of law. He also approved the appointment of 14 members into the board of the agency.
According to the ICIR, charges were already being prepared against Aliyu in preparation of taking her to court before she was appointed to the new position.
A police investigative report indicted her and recommended her for prosecution.
“Aliyu is said to be highly connected in the corridors of power and might have used her clout to get nominated to the ICPC board to stop her prosecution by the commission,” the website had said in its report.
“Apart from the ICPC investigation, our investigations also show that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Police have investigated several corruption cases against Aliyu, a former executive director of the Aso Savings and Loans.”
She was accused of diverting N58 million from the sales of property of her employer, Aso Savings and Loans for her personal use, The Cable reports.
