Nigeria - Freshly analysed 1967 secret files of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) predicted that had Nigeria’s civil war which began that year failed to quell the uprising by pro-Biafra separatists in the southeast, late Chief Awolowo would have tried to seize control of the federal government.
According to the files, Nigeria was at the edge of war and the Nigerian Army could lose to Biafran forces for a number of reasons.

It read: “For some reasons, the chances are the Federal Forces will be unable to put down the East’s ‘rebellion’.”
The CIA noted that should this happen, Awolowo would have taken control of the central government or at least drawn away the southwest region of the country from the Nigerian union.

CIA predicted: “Chief Awolowo, leader of the Western region, would probably attempt to seize control of the Federal Government, or at least to establish an independent regime in the Western region.”
Before this move, CIA predicted that Nigeria would have disintegrated with all parts of the country witnessing tribal attacks and banditry.
