Nigeria - Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, February 22, begged PDP governors to avoid divisive tendencies within the party.
The recently victorious Sheriff, while speaking in Abuja to the party leaders from the South-West paid him a solidarity visit begged for peace and unity.
Senator Sheriff, also emphasized that while governors were important to the party, they must avoid, anything that will further divide the party.
According to Vanguard, he then focused on Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, who had been quite vocal in criticising the leadership of Senator Sheriff to “respect himself and respect the PDP.”
Some members of the PDP in the House of Representatives have threatened to drag Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to the Supreme Court in a bid to upturn the recent Appeal Court judgment which made him national chairman.
Sheriff addressing those who visited him said: “Yes, our governors are very important people. They are leaders of the party in their own right. I beg them not to divide the party. Let everybody unite and build the party."
Speaking on Fayose, he said: "For Governor Ayo Fayose, I have no issues to join with him because I cannot even comment on some of the things he says and does. Doing that would amount to coming back to his level.
"But I beg him to respect himself, to respect the PDP, respect Nigeria because whatever you say today, posterity will judge you. I beg him to control himself."
Sheriff also said his leadership to take PDP to higher height. He said: "As I said, this victory is for every member of PDP.; there is no loser. People can vent their anger but as a leader and father of everybody, I want to make sure that this party is united."
The Makarfi-led section of the PDP in a statement signed by its leader, Leo Ogor, expressed disappointment with the Appeal Court judgment that recognised Sheriff as national chairman of the party.
They released a statement saying: "The PDP caucus of the House of Representative wishes to state categorically that it finds the Court of Appeal verdict that nullified the decision of the national convention of the PDP on May 21, 2016 and reinstated the Modu Sheriff leadership very discomforting, the Caucus supports the decision of the Ahmed Makarfi Caretaker Committee to seek redress at the Supreme Court.
"The Caucus appeals to all leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party to please remain calm and focused, standing firmly on the position that there is no way the party will accept the Ali Modu Sheriff contraption which is yet to demonstrate any genuine iota of love for the party.
“Their activities in Edo and Ondo states are very fresh in peoples’ minds and as such, no honest and sincere member of our party can trust them; with such fundamental flaws of character and gross disdain for peace, order and brotherly relations.”
Meanwhile, Sheriff who spoke at a meeting with some members of the party from the South-West in Abuja on Wednesday, February 22, said he will not remain as PDP national chairman forever.
He also said his mission as the party's leader is to take PDP back to its 1999 glory.
