Court sentences killer of human rights lawyer, Fadipe, to death by hanging

Nigeria - Justice Atinuke Ipaye of a Lagos High court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced to death, a 27-year old man, Oluwaseun Oladapo, for the murder of a human rights crusader and social commentator, Mr Kunle Fadipe. 
The judge found him guilty on the five-count charge brought against him by the Lagos State.

He was charged for murder, armed robbery, assault, and possession of dangerous weapons. His offences are punishable under sections 295, 228 and 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Ipaye said that the totality of evidence placed before the court by the prosecution, the prosecution has proof the case beyond reasonable doubt.

“I am satisfied with the evidence placed before the court by the prosecution, is overwhelming, cogent, direct and police officer did a creditable job.“The testimony of pw1 (Mrs Kemi Fadipe, the widow) and pw2 (Biola Owolabi, sister-in-law) was convincing, coherent and unequivocal.”
Justice Ipaye pointed out that Oladapo went to the deceased’s house with the intent to commit the crime, adding that his action’s led to the children of the deceased having to grow up without a father.
“It is impossible for you to claim self defence for your actions when you are the perpetrator of the violence. You are hereby sentenced to death by hanging for the first three counts, and you shall be hanged in the neck until dead. May the Almighty God forgive you,” she ruled.
