Nigeria - Eight persons have been sentenced to a total of 104 years in jail by a Kwale High Court in Delta State for the kidnap of the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr Monday Igbuya on May 21, 2009, at Sapele.
The accused persons who were handed the harsh sentence by Justice O. Jalogo-Williams on Tuesday included Godspower Ikoro, Godspower Omoniyi (an ex-soldier) , Ernest Atteh, John Adapamu, Ife Freedom,Sunday Uba Tiemo, Kemi Koinyang and Isaiah Mumbor.

The accused, who were charged to court on Charge No S/1c/2010, were transferred from the Sapele High Court in 2011 to Kwale for trial on a six-count charge of conspiracy to commit a felony, kidnapping, armed robbery and the substantive case of kidnap of Igbuya and demanding the sum N100 million as ransom.
The lawmaker was released on May 27, 2009, after six days in the den of the kidnappers who were paid N1 million ransom.
Justice Jalogo-Williams found the eight accused persons guilty on the count of kidnapping and demanding property with menace and sentenced them to 10 years (for kidnapping) in jail each with hard Labour and 3years in imprisonment (for demanding N100 million with menaces). The Court further held that the sentences are to run concurrently.
The trial judge, however, discharged them on the count of armed robbery for lack of sufficient evidence by the prosecution.
