Nigeria - The Federal Road Safety Corps has denied claims that its officials will be armed henceforth.
In a statement by the Head Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, the Corps called on Nigerians to disregard the claims as they had no basis.
The statement said the Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, had been misquoted when he decried the number of FRSC officials killed by motorists avoiding arrests and that such incidents could have been avoided if the officers had arms.
It added that although the operatives of the corps have undergone regular arms training, and the amendment of the FRSC Establishment Act of 2007 permits road traffic managers to bear arms, the Corps had no plan to bear arms now.
He said the pictures of armed FRSC officers making the rounds were of the officers that underwent training.
The agency urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and desist from harming operatives of the corps “who are only out to ensure that road crashes are reduced drastically”.
