Customers who bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from the firm's website are being sent fire-resistent packages to return the faulty devices.
The company is offering prepaid shipping boxes as a precaution to protect against possible fires or explosions.
It said consumers who purchased their smartphones from mobile carriers should visit their websites for recall instructions.
The kits, which have just started arriving in America, contain a protective bag, thermally insulated boxes and gloves.
It also contains a warning the handset can only be shipped by ground due to concerns it could explode in the air.
However, customers in the UK may have to wait as the Royal Mail has banned delivery of the phones, making it potentially difficult to return them.
It said customers would be asked to detail the contents of their packages to ensure that hazardous items were not transported.
On Tuesday, Samsung confirmed it was stopping production of the device just two months after it was launched following two recalls and reports of fires.
This follows the announcement in September that it was suspending sales of the phone.
It is now expecting the return of more than 1.5 million phones, most of which were sold in America and South Korea.
About 2.5 million Note 7s were recalled last month after reports some had caught fire because of faulty lithium batteries.
The electronic giant has slashed its profts forecast and blamed the financial impact of pulling the phone for its decision.
Shares in the company have also fallen since news of the defect broke, with more than $18bn (£14.6bn) wiped off its value.
