The badly-burnt body of a man dumped in a lay-by in Derbyshire had no head, arms or legs, police have revealed.
Officers believe the torso had been placed in a suitcase, the charred remnants of which were found nearby.
The lay-by is situated off the A628, just east of Tintwistle in Derbyshire and north of Valehouse and Rhodeswood reservoirs.
The grim discovery was made a member of the public at 12.30pm on Monday.
Police believe the remains were left in the lay-by between 9pm and midnight the previous day.
The area, which is close to the Peak District National Park, is popular with dog walkers and ramblers.
It has been established the man was white or light-skinned and probably under the age of 50.
His identity remains a mystery, however, as there is no match for his DNA on the national database.
Assistant Chief Constable Bill McWilliam, of Derbyshire Constabulary, said: "We are working with other forces to ascertain whether our victim may have been reported missing in a neighbouring county.
"But we recognise that he might not have been reported missing at all.
"We are therefore asking members of the public to come forward if they have not seen a neighbour, a friend, a colleague or indeed members of their family recently."
Mr McWilliam told reporters he was "pretty satisfied" that "this poor individual" was not murdered in the lay-by.
Detectives would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time they believe the body was dumped.
They also want to hear from people who regularly travel along the A628 between Tintwistle and Flounch so their vehicles can be eliminated from the inquiry.
Mr McWilliam said a post-mortem examination had taken place but the cause of death had yet to be ascertained.
He said one possible line of inquiry was that the victim could be a foreign national and with this in mind officers were liaising with Europol.
CCTV footage in the vicinity is also being reviewed.
