New gender-equal emojis found interesting as messaging tools

After downloading the latest iPhone update, I couldn't help cheering inside: users can finally celebrate some gender-equal emojis.
Among the new icons available in iOS 10, users can select a policewoman, a female detective, a woman wearing a hard-hat and female basketball players, surfers or cyclists.

It's a refreshing change from the depressingly stereotypical depictions of women in emoji land, which include princesses, brides and women dancing or getting their hair cut.

The new iOS 10 update also includes emojis for single-parent families, men dancing in bunny outfits and the rainbow flag.
Emoji tweaks can sound like a small step forward for feminism, but little things can matter.
The popular pictures used on messaging services and social media are the fastest growing language in the world.
The original 176 icons created by a Japanese designer in 1999 have now spiralled into an internet phenomenon, with more than 1,800 emojis that are estimated to be used by 90% of the world's online population.
The pictures transcend languages and borders, allowing people to communicate across the globe.

Women are also more likely than men to use emojis on their phones.
For feminists, language matters - it can create norms and colour prejudices.
Languages are constantly evolving to reflect shifts in society, for instance, with English switching to gender-neutral terms such as "chair" or "actor".
In France, feminists have campaigned to change grammar that differentiates between the male and female, claiming that it instils gender prejudices.
With that in mind, the rapid growth of emojis initially seemed a step backwards for equality, with their focus on men doing sports and having jobs and women focusing on their appearance (getting their fingernails painted, or cutting their hair).
The latest update couldn't come soon enough.
