Algerian club Entente Setif were disqualified from the CAF Champions League Friday after crowd trouble during their opening group game, the African Football Confederation said.
Frustrated as their lacklustre team headed to a 2-0 defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on June 18, Algerian spectators hurled various missiles onto the pitch.
Items thrown on the pitch included bottles and firecrackers and some spectators and security personnel were injured. After a fruitless 10-minute attempt to restart play, the Malian referee abandoned the match which had reached stoppage time.
Kicking out Setif leaves Sundowns, Enyimba of Nigeria and Zamalek of Egypt in Group B and the clubs finishing first and second advance to the semi-finals.
The other group comprises Al Ahly of Egypt, ASEC Mimosas of the Ivory Coast, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Zesco United of Zambia. Setif are the second club after Etoile Sahel of Tunisia to be disqualified from the group phase of the Champions League since its 1997 launch.
