NIGERIA - JOHESU THREATEN NATIONWIDE STRIKE OVER UNFULFILLED DEMANDS

Medical and Health workers under the auspices Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, and the Assembly of Health care Professionals, AHPA, yesterday issued a 7 –day ultimatum to embark on a nationwide industrial warning strike should the Federal government fail to meet their demands by midnight of Tuesday 31st May, 2016.

In a jointly signed press statement made available to the press, the workers expressed displeasure that the Federal government was yet to fulfil an agreement it entered into with the unions since May 2012. They also expressed worry that 12 days after the Unions delivered a letter to the federal government in respect of the 2012 agreement, there is no evidence that anything has been done on issues that have been agreed upon.

The aggrieved workers are demanding for the implementation of 13 months or tortuous court process, which were resolved in their favour in 2013, Adjustment of salary as done for NMA since January 2014, implementations of court judgements for NANNM and Medical Laboratory Scientists among others.

The statement said: “Having waited this long and exercised enough patience, we have no option than to resume the strike we suspended in February, 2014 if our collective agreements are not implemented within 15 days with effect from Tuesday 17th, 2016.

“It is our prayer that government will avail itself of this 15 days window of opportunity to address the earlier stated demands,” the statement stated.
