Louis van Gaal has been sacked as manager of Manchester United, clearing the way for Jose Mourinho to be appointed in his place.
In a statement, executive vice chairman Ed Woodward thanked van Gaal for his "excellent work in the past two years, culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club".
A decision on a successor as manager is going to be announced soon, the news release added.
Van Gaal was informed that his contract with United was being terminated at United's Carrington training ground little more than 36 hours after watching his side win the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday.
The Dutchman arrived at Carrington before 9am and was joined an hour later by employment lawyer Paul Gilroy, who has acted for numerous high-profile football managers including his predecessor David Moyes.
In a meeting with United’s executive vice chairman, van Gaal was told that he would not serve the final year of his three-year contract. Three Dutch members of his coaching staff have also been relieved of their duties.
The departure allows Mourinho and his representative Jorge Mendes to finalise a contract for him to take over at United, with talks expected to be held in the UK on Tuesday.
A statement from Louis van Gaal has been posted on Manchester United's website, which said: "It has been an honour to manage such a magnificent club as Manchester United FC, and in doing so, I have fulfilled a long-held ambition.
"I am very disappointed to be unable to complete our intended three-year plan. I believe that the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success."
He thanked the club's owners and board members for the opportunity to manage the club - and described the team's supporters as "truly the best fans in the world".
It was widely reported after the FA Cup final on Saturday evening that United were preparing to appoint Mourinho having decided that, after a season in which United finished only fifth, he could not guarantee a return to Champions League football.
Poor results were accompanied by stolid, slow football that was anathema to an Old Trafford crowd raised on the attacking style of Sir Alex Ferguson’s triumphant teams over two decades.
Van Gaal is understood to be furious at news of his impending departure having been reported before he was informed, but the club was not responsible for leaking the information and has offered no comment on his position for several months.
