Star Wars was the big winner at the Jameson Empire Awards with wins for its cast members and director JJ Abrams.
The Force Awakens was honoured with five prizes, including best visual effects and best sci-fi/fantasy, which were collected by C3PO actor, Anthony Daniels.
The film's young British stars John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were named the best male and female newcomers.
The Martian star Matt Damon was awarded the best actor prize by director Paul Greengrass.
The pair have recently teamed up again for Jason Bourne, the fifth instalment of the Bourne series.
Alicia Vikander won best actress for The Danish Girl, and Bond director Sam Mendes was on hand to pick up the best British film award for Spectre.
Stanley Tucci was named Empire hero in recognition for his recent performances in The Hunger Games series and the Oscar-winning film Spotlight.
He was presented the award by Miranda Richardson, who is currently co-starring with him in the biopic Churchill.
The late Alan Rickman was also honoured at the ceremony, hosted by David Walliams, by being named this year's Empire Legend.
Andy Serkis, who stars as the computer-animated villain Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars, said the film's success rested on the vision of Abrams in "bringing back the authenticity of the original films".
"It's all about character. It's not about worlds that have lots of characters but no real heart to them," he said.
"That was JJ's ambition, to really engage with the characters.
"Looking back to when I first started off in theatre, what I really enjoyed was engaging with the audience, and it's great to see that audience getting bigger in the work I've been doing.
"It's been great to work with some very skilled story-tellers and directors, and now taking that on myself, you realise it's such a big responsibility."
