News: Nigeria - Army nab 20 pipeline vandals

The Defence Head Quarters (DHQ), yesterday warned that the military and security agencies will no longer fold its arms and allow any person or group of persons threaten or embark on acts of sabotage against the Nigerian state.

Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, who gave the warning in a statement issued in Abuja, said the warning has become necessary following reports by some groups in the Niger Delta to embark on such acts.

Rabe, who said such acts were capable of breaching the security and causing economic sabotage in the Niger Delta part of the country, noted that while the military recognises the supremacy of the constitution which guarantees freedom of expression and association, the same constitution also frowns against individuals or groups hiding under it to stir up trouble and insecurity in the land.

Meanwhile, Operation Pulo Shield (OP PS) said it has arrested some suspects in connection with the bombing of oil pipelines in Delta and Bayelsa States.

Coordinator of Joint Media Campaign Centre, Col. Isa Ado, said the suspects are undergoing interrogation to determine their level of involvement in the multiple bombings.

Ado disclosed that Major General Alani Gafar Okunola, made the arrest possible because of the directive on cordon-and-search operation.

Ado said: “In line with the Operation PULO SHIELD’s determination to track and arrest perpetrators of the recent multiple attacks and bombing of some oil pipelines and installations across Niger Delta Region, some suspects were arrested and are currently undergoing thorough preliminary investigation to ascertain, their degree of involvement before handing them over to prosecuting agencies, while effort is on to track and arrest fleeing vandals. The success of the arrest was due to highly intensified patrols and cordon-and-search of the waterways, creeks and communities by the Joint Force in line with the directives of the Commander Operation PULO SHIELD, Major General Alani Gafar Okunlola to apprehend those behind the criminal act…”

Suspected militants recently attacked and vandalised some oil and gas pipelines across the Niger Delta among which were the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Gas pipeline in Egwa 1 Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State and Agip pipeline in Brass council of Bayelsa State. The patrol of the general area has been intensified while cordon-and-search operation continues until all the culprits are arrested.
