Security tightens as anglophone separatists symbolically proclaim 'independence' in Cameroon

Police patrolled empty streets in Cameroon's restive anglophone belt as a separatist group made a symbolic proclamation of independence on Sunday, a day after a young man was shot dead by security forces.

In Buea, the main city in the English-speaking southwest, the streets were mostly deserted as security forces patrolled the streets including the area where the separatists were expected to gather, an AFP correspondent reported.

Suspect arrested in Canada 'terror attack'

Canadian police arrested a Somalian man Sunday suspected of stabbing an officer and deliberately ramming pedestrians during a high-speed chase in a rented truck, injuring four in what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced as a "terrorist attack."

The crime spree began Saturday evening outside a football stadium in the western city of Edmonton and ended hours later when the suspect's U-Haul rental truck flipped onto its side with police in hot pursuit.

Tragedy as two children burnt to death in overnight fire in Lagos

Nigeria - It was weeping and wailing on Saturday night as two children of the same parent were burnt to death in a fire outbreak in Ifako Ijaiye area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. The incident occurred at No. 2, Bola Oyewo Street, Ifako Ijaiye around 9:00p.m.

It was gathered that the mother of the children had lit a candle at night and went out to plait her hair, leaving the two children aged two and four inside the house sleeping.

Catalonia Referendum: 90% of voters back independence, Catalan officials say

Preliminary results show that 90% of those who voted in Catalonia's independence referendum backed leaving Spain, Catalan officials say.

Catalonia's government said that of the 2.2m voters who were able to cast ballots in the banned referendum, two million voted for independence.

Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu was under attack yesterday for his revelation of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu’s whereabouts.

Kanu has not been seen or heard from since last month’s  fracas between his supporters and troops near his Afaraukwu home in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. His lawyers have urged the High Court in Abuja to compel the military to produce him, “having taken him away when they invaded his house”. But the military has since denied taking Kanu away.

Man commits suicide in Edo, hangs himself in his house

Nigeria - A middle-aged man identified as Muhammed on Saturday night committed suicide in Auchi, in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was gathered that Muhammed who is a motorcycle spare parts dealer has been  behaving  strangely.

Nigeria - Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has paid tribute to President Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Aisha.

He also stated that political differences in Nigeria needs ‘fixing’ in order not to jeopardize national development.

Nigeria - The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced the death of a former National President of the association, Mr Dauda Mohammed, aged 38, after a protracted illness.

NANS’ President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said Mohammed died on Sunday en route India where he had gone for medical treatment.

President Buhari marks National Day with Army in Maiduguri

Nigeria - President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday marked the military ceremonies of the National Independence Day in Maiduguri, Borno State, the epicenter of the Boko Haram terrorism and insurgency to honor the courage and sacrifices of the Armed Forces.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said that the ceremony, which was marked with a display of military hardware and a show of air power by the Air Force, took place at the Maimalari Military Cantonment which houses the headquarters of the Theatre Command, “Operation Lafiya Dole.”

Nigeria - A former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu has revealed that the the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has absconded to London through Malaysia.

In an interview with the Punch newspaper, Kalu said that contrary to the claim by some people that Kanu was arrested and taken away by the military after some of the supporters of his separatist group clashed with soldiers in Umuahia, the former governor said Kanu has absconded from the country and is now in London.

Tragedy as 6 killed in Benue boat mishap

Nigeria - At least six people have lost their lives on Friday night after the boat which they were travelling in capsized at the middle of River Katsina-Ala in Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.




Witnesses said that the incident occurred between 7:30 and 8:00pm during a heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm.

Scores of Boko Haram insurgents reportedly killed in Borno

Nigeria - Scores of Boko Haram militants were killed on Friday evening during a failed attempt to attack military Barrack in Bama town of Bama local government area of Borno State.

Daily Post reports that the attackers engaged the military within the hours of 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., before they were repelled.

At least 25 football fans hurt as barrier collapses in French league game

Three people were seriously injured when safety barriers collapsed at a French Ligue 1 game between Amiens and Lille on Saturday, leading to the match being abandoned, the match delegate said.

"In light of the events, and given the fact that about 25 were injured, three of them seriously, it has been decided that the game would not resume," Noel Mannino said.
