Illegai migration: Germany to deport 1,500 Gambians

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has confirmed a total of 1,500 Gambians who landed in Germany without documentation will be deported, a joint news conference in Banjul stated on Friday.
Steinmeier said this during his official visit to the West African country that emerged from a tense political standoff early this year.

The Gambia has revoked the diplomatic passports of ex-leader Yahya Jammeh and his associates, the foreign ministry said Thursday, as the new government pursues former regime figures it believes embezzled state funds.
Jammeh plundered an estimated $50 million before leaving for exile in Equatorial Guinea in January after 22 years in power, the country’s justice minister announced in May, promising a commission would trace the money.

Freedom at last as Gambia frees nearly 100 prisoners from Jammeh era

Gambian authorities have released 98 prisoners, mostly from the notorious Mile 2 prison, an Interior Ministry spokesman said on Friday, as the country seeks to turn a page on the authoritarian era of ousted former president Yahya Jammeh.
The release follows the freeing of about 170 prisoners two weeks ago.

The Gambia’s President Adama Barrow on Thursday arrived in Senegal, which played a key role in his rise to power by helping force his predecessor Yahya Jammeh from office, an AFP journalist said.
The visit, which is due to run until Saturday, is Barrow’s first official trip abroad as president.
Barrow won his nation’s presidential election in December, but for six weeks Jammeh refused to concede defeat following 22 years of rule.

Gambia’s Barrow replaces armed forces chief




Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has fired the head of the armed forces, General Ousman Badjie, a former loyalist of the ousted government, a military source said Monday.
He was replaced by General Masanneh Kinteh, a special military adviser to Barrow since January.

The Gambia is to rejoin The Commonwealth within months - after four years outside the group of 52 states.
The Gambian government withdrew in 2013 under its then leader Yahya Jammeh, who called it a "neo-colonial institution".
But Adama Barrow, who was sworn in as president in January, lived in Britain for three years when he was younger and has said he wants to rekindle ties.

The European Union announced aid worth 225 million euros ($240 million) on Thursday for The Gambia’s new government as President Adama Barrow said his nation was “virtually bankrupt” due to economic mismanagement by the former regime.
The EU froze assistance to The Gambia in December 2014 over the dire human rights record of ex-president Yahya Jammeh, whose security services were accused by rights groups of extrajudicial killings, torture and forced disappearances.

38 years after, Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has confirmed on Friday, February 3, that he will not run in this year’s presidential election.
Although he is stepping down as president of the country, he has said he will retain control of the powerful ruling party, the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

President Adama Barrow removes Islamic from Gambia's name

The new Gambia President Adama Barrow has removed the ‘Islamic’ title from the country’s name.
According to Aljazeera, the president made this known at his first news conference since returning to take office on Thursday, January 26.
The country was renamed Islamic Republic of The Gambia by former President Yahya Jammeh on 11 December 2015.

Gambian President Adama Barrow said Saturday that every aspect of his tiny west African state would need an overhaul after ex-leader Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year rule, but that its dread secret police would remain.
Barrow faces an uphill task after taking over from Jammeh, who left behind a dysfunctional economy and allegedly emptied state coffers ahead of his departure.

Senegalese police said on Friday that they had arrested Gen. Bora Colley, the man who ran Gambia’s prisons, where human rights groups claimed perceived opponents were tortured and in some cases died.

Colley was made the director of prisons by Gambia’s former leader, Yahya Jammeh, who lost an election last month but refused to step down.

The new president of The Gambia, who was unable to take up his post because the incumbent refused to leave office, has been widely cheered as he arrived in the country.
Adama Barrow, a former security guard at Argos, returned to the capital Banjul nearly two months after winning an election.
His predecessor Yahya Jammeh disputed the result and said he would not stand down, bringing the country to the brink of military intervention.

Gambian President Adama Barrow has requested that troops of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) should remain in his country for the next six months.

ECOWAS Commission President Marcel Alain de Souza, who revealed this yesterday in Abuja, said Barrow would go back to his country from Senegal as soon as it was convenient.

Gambian ex-president Yahya Jammeh will be allowed to keep his collection of 13 luxury cars and fly them out to his exiled home in Equatorial Guinea, a spokesman for new president Adama Barrow said Tuesday.
Barrow’s spokesman confirmed to AFP an agreement had been struck to facilitate Jammeh’s exit on Saturday in order to end a weeks-long impasse caused by the ex-leader’s refusal to recognise Barrow’s election victory.

Gambia’ s President Adama Barrow will return to Banjul today to begin his tenure, almost 72 hours after long serving serving ruler, Yahya Jammeh went into exile in Equatorial Guinea. 

Barrow, who has been staying in Dakar, the Senegalese capital since last week announced his departure on his Twitter handle and Facebook page today, hours after he announced his decision to pick Fatoumata Tambajang, 68 years old, as vice president.

Gambia's outgoing leader, Yahya Jammeh, has been accused of emptying the country's banks of 500m Gambian dalasis (£9.2m) in the last two weeks of his reign.
"The coffers are virtually empty," said Mai Ahmed Fatty, one of the coalition's key leaders and special adviser to the new President, Adama Barrow.
