Angola swears in Lourenco after Dos Santos 38-year reign

Jose Eduardo dos Santos’s 38-year reign over Angola finally came to an end Tuesday when his hand-picked successor Joao Lourenco was inaugurated as president at a ceremony in Luanda.

Lourenco read an oath in which he vowed “on my honour to devote myself” to the role of president, as he took power after the ruling MPLA party won last month’s election.

Angola’s ruling MPLA wins election



Angola’s Electoral Commission declared Wednesday that the ruling MPLA party had won last month’s election, in a victory that allows outgoing President Jose Eduardo dos Santos to install a party loyalist in his place after 38 years in power.
The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) garnered 61.7 percent of the vote, and a majority of 150 of the 220 seats in parliament, the head of the electoral commission, Andre da Silva Neto, said in announcing the final results.

No fewer than 400 Jehovah’s Witnesses passed out when assailants attacked the “Don’t Give Up!” 2017 Regional Convention of the Witnesses in Luanda, Angola.
About 7,000 delegates were in attendance at the convention, which held at the weekend.

Jehovah’s Witness convention in Angola was attacked with toxic gas on Friday, causing over 400 people to faint.
A local news source, Portal de Angola, reported on Saturday that three young men were detained after the attack.

Angola awaits vote outcome on successor to Dos Santos



Angolans on Thursday awaited results from an election to chose a successor to President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, a secretive and much-criticised leader stepping down after 38 years in power.
The electoral commission was expected to release first partial results later Thursday, with the ruling MPLA widely predicted to retain power and install its candidate Joao Lourenco as president.

Angola dethrones Nigeria as Africa's top oil producer

Nigeria has again lost its place as the top oil producer in Africa after Angola overtook it.
Nigeria had overtaken Angola in December 2016 according to the monthly report released by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) following a ceasefire announced by Niger Delta militant but the southern African country has claimed the top spot again.

Angola's president orders inquiry into stadium stampede that killed 17

Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has ordered an investigation into the cause of a stampede at a football match in which at least 17 people were killed.
Scores of people were injured in the stampede at a stadium in the northern city of Uige on Friday when hundreds of supporters stormed the venue's gates.

At least 17 people have died and dozens have been injured in a stampede at an Angolan football stadium.
Hundreds of fans stormed the gates of the January 4th stadium in Uige to watch a match between local teams, a medical official said.

74-year-old Angolan president Dos Santos agrees to step down

38 years after, Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has confirmed on Friday, February 3, that he will not run in this year’s presidential election.
Although he is stepping down as president of the country, he has said he will retain control of the powerful ruling party, the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).
