Nigeria - The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has warned officers and men of the Cross River State Police Command not to retaliate Tuesday’s attack on the Akim Police Station in Calabar by some ratings of the Nigerian Navy.
The attack followed the shooting of a Navy personnel in the shoulder by a policeman after argument over traffic infractions.
Idris, who inspected the burnt facilities at the police station including vehicles, and other equipment, disclosed that, "an independent panel of inquiry would soon be set up to investigate the incident."
Represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Training and Capacity Development, Emmanuel Inyang, the IG lamented how a minor disagreement was allowed to escalate.
Addressing officers and men of the Akim Police Station, Inyang insisted that order must be maintained.
He said the Police hierarchy would not allow the existing cordial relationship with the military and other security agencies to be jeopardised.
The DIG, alongside the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Marafa, Commander, Nigeria Navy Ship Victory, Commodore Salihu Jibril, as well as the state Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa, also visited the two policemen injured at the Police Clinic and the naval rating at Navy Clinic in Calabar.
