Manchester United will only offer manager Jose Mourinho a new deal, if he leads the club back into the Champions League.
The club’s hierarchy were preparing to hand Mourinho a contract extension and pay rise, on the four-year deal he signed when he arrived Old Trafford last summer, when it seemed they would finish in the top four.
However, United have finished sixth and their only hope of returning to the Champions League, is if they defeat Ajax in the Europa League final next Wednesday.
Mourinho currently earns £15million a year, the same as Manchester City bossm Pep Guardiola and it makes the two men the world’s highest-paid managers.
United will lose more than £50million in revenues if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, with their £75million-a-year kit manufacturing deal with adidas set to be slashed by 30%.
