Armed men have stormed a prison in Bahrain, killing a police officers and freeing 10 inmates convicted of terrorism charges, the interior minister said.
The prison break set off a manhunt for the attackers and the escaped convicts across the tiny island nation in the Gulf.
The Jau prison, located outside the country's capital Manama, is used for those convicted of terror charges and other serious crimes, as well as political prisoners.
After several hours of confusion following the prison break on Sunday, the interior ministry said the attack had been launched by "a terrorist cell of four to six members armed with automatic rifles and pistols".
In its statement early on Monday it identified the dead police officer as Abdulsalam Saif Ahmed and said a second officer suffered moderate wounds in the attack.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Bahrain crushed mass Arab Spring protests in 2011 but has continued to suffer occasional outbursts, mostly by majority Shia demanding reforms from the kingdom's Sunni rulers.
A small nation off the coast of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet and an under-construction British naval base.
