Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova says she is "fortunate to be alive" after being stabbed at her home during an apparent burglary.
The 26-year-old was injured by a knife-wielding attacker in what has been described as a "random" attack at her home in the eastern Czech town of Prostejov on Tuesday morning.
Police say the suspect, who reportedly took around £155, is on the run.
The tennis star revealed details of her ordeal on social media.
"In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive," she said.
"The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this."
The world number 11 added: "What has happened to me was not pleasant at all, but it is already behind me.
"The main thing for me now is that the doctors will determine how my hand is doing. I trust them and I believe that it will end well."
Her spokesman Karel Tejkal told Czech news agency CTK: "It was a random criminal act.
"She was assaulted in her apartment and is in the care of doctors, but her injuries are not life threatening."
Kvitova had been at home recovering from a stress fracture to her foot and recently withdrew from the Hopman Cup mixed-team tournament in January.
She turned professional in 2006 and has won 19 career singles titles, including Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.
