A senior Somali commander and six other soldiers died Sunday after a suicide car bomber rammed his car into their military convoy as it travelled through the capital, Mogadishu, a military source said.
“It was a highly organised terrorist attack,” said the source, who did not want to be identified.
The commander was identified as Maj.- Gen. Mohamed Jimale Rooble Goobale. The suicide bomber was also killed.
Witnesses reported a powerful explosion while Islamist group al-Shabaab has taken responsibility for the attack on pro-insurgent radio Andalus. Several soldiers were also injured, security official Mohamed Hassan said.
