Scores Injured As Train Derails After Hitting Tree In South France

More than a dozen people have been seriously injured in a train crash in southern France, say rescuers.

Another 50 people suffered minor injuries when the TER train hit a tree that had fallen on the tracks during a storm.

The train, which was travelling from Nimes to Montpellier, derailed near the small town of Le Cres, just east of its destination.
Some 250 passengers were reportedly aboard the intercity train, which was travelling at 140kmph (87mph) at the time of Wednesday afternoon's accident.
"One passenger is critically ill, a dozen are badly hurt and another 50 are suffering light injuries," said a paramedic spokesman who gave his name as Captain Mercier.

A spokeswoman for the local prefecture in the Herault region said the most seriously injured person was evacuated by helicopter.
Around 80 rescue workers went to the scene, where national rail operator SNCF said "access is very difficult".
