The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday charged its officers to be civil in the discharge of their duties.
Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Lagos Sector Commander of the Corps, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that the corps had always taken advantage of every available opportunity to sensitise its officers on global standards of civil engagement.
“We always give our men the orientation on how best they can do their jobs, with emphasis on personal safety.
“For instance, the attitude of jumping in front of a vehicle is not in consonance with our operation procedure.
“We have always talked to our men to be very civil in approaching offenders.
“You will not use yourself as a wedge in stopping vehicles,’’ Omeje said.
He added that the standard practice was for the corps’ operations unit to undertake a pre-patrol brief before each day’s operation.
“Every officer is expected to have a parchment note for jotting the number plate of any erring motorist.
“With the number taken down, we go to our database to fish out the particulars of the owner and issue the person with a fine ticket,’’ he added.
According to the commander, it is a traffic offence and against the corps’ ethics for an officer to jump into an offending driver’s vehicle.
“If investigated and found guilty, such officer will be made to face disciplinary action,’’ he said.
Omeje urged motorists to adhere to the highway code and obey FRSC officers, when flagged down.
He also warned the general public against assaulting officers and men of the corps on duty, saying such acts would not be tolerated.
