Up to 1,000 properties are being evacuated in Bath after contractors found what is believed to be a "large" unexploded World War Two bomb.
A 300-metre cordon has been set up, while residents have been taken to Bath Racecourse.
Avon and Somerset Police said they were called to Royal High School on Lansdown Road at 4.40 pm on Thursday.
The local Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is in attendance.
Road closures have been put in place, with motorists advised to find alternative routes.
Force Incident Manager, Inspector Rob Pearson said: "We anticipate that it is not going to be resolved this evening."
He added that a range of emergency services were involved in a "multi-agency approach to keep people safe".
Inspector Gavin Usher said: "We would like to thank everyone who has been inconvenienced for their patience while we deal with this incident.
"Decisions to evacuate houses are never taken lightly but during these incidents public safety will always be our primary concern."
