Buhari hosts top judicial delegates tells CJN to establish special courts within prisons

Nigeria - President Muhammadu Buhari has suggested that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, establishes special courts within prisons to hasten the process of justice dispensation and decongest correctional facilities in Nigeria.

He made the suggestion in his remarks when he hosted a delegation of the judicial arm of government at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

EFCC denies investigating CJN Onnoghen over corrupt practices

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, is not under investigation for alleged corruption.
In a statement by its spokesperson Wilson Uwajuren, the EFCC stated that the recently leaked report of the probe of the CJN was not accurate.

DSS refutes report on alleged recovery of $9m in CJN Onnoghen’s home

Nigeria - Department of State Service (DSS) on Sunday denied circulating reports that its operatives recovered $9m from the home of Chief Justice of t Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, during an operation.
A top security officer with the intelligence service stated that the report is false in its entirety.

Nigeria - The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, yesterday raised the alarm that the nation’s judiciary is under threat.
He spoke during a thanksgiving service at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Abuja Diocese, Zone 3.
Justice Onnoghen who thanked God for seeing him through his delayed emergence as the substantive CJN called on Nigerians to pray for the survival of the judiciary.

Nigeria - Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday swore in Justice Walter Onnoghen as the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Onnoghen was sworn in as acting CJN by President Muhammadu Buhari November 10, 2016 following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC).


He took yesterday’s oath on substantive basis following his confirmation by the Senate.

Nigeria - Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday urged Nigerians to stop celebrating treasury looters.
To him, it is unfortunate that someone accused of corruption is celebrated in his hometown because people believe he has taken his share of the national cake.
“Today someone who is corrupt is celebrated. There is a problem that we must resolve, and if we don’t resolve it, it will hurt us very, very badly, just as it is hurting us already,” he said.

UPDATED: Walter Onnoghen confirmed as Nigeria’s chief justice

Nigeria - Justice Walter Onnoghen has been confirmed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria by the Nigerian Senate after occupying the position for more than three months in an acting capacity.
His confirmation made the first CJN from the southern part of Nigeria in 30 years.
Onnoghen was sworn-in by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 10, 2016, after the retirement of the immediate past CJN Justice Mahmud Mohammed.

The confirmation followed the screening of the nominee by a Committee.
The Nigerian Senate earlier today began the screening of Justice Walter Onnoghen for the vacant post of the chief justice of Nigeria.

NJC seeks extension of acting Chief Justice Onnoghen’s tenure, no emergency Senate session

Noigeria - The Senate yesterday said it would not convene an emergency session to screen and confirm the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen whose name has been forwarded to the upper legislative chamber by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo.
But an emergency meeting will no longer be necessary as the National Judicial Council (NJC), the body empowered to recommend judicial officers for appointment has transmitted a letter to the presidency, seeking the extension of Onnoghen’s period as the acting CJN, for another three months.

Nigeria - With less than 48 hours to the expiration of the tenure of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to forward his name to the Senate for confirmation.
Buhari in a letter said his name should be transmitted to the upper chamber before February 10 when Onnoghen’s tenure in acting capacity would elapse, The Cable reports.

Report indicates that the Presidency is set to confirm Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria

The Leadership reports that President Muhammadu Buhari has resolved to appoint Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).


There has been concerns over whether Onnoghen would become substantive CJN since the president was yet to forward his name to the Senate barely a week to the end of the three months that he can hold the post on acting capacity.
