Elisabeth Valerio, leader of the United Zimbabwe Alliance, has been granted permission by the Electoral Court to contest the 2023 presidential election after her papers were initially rejected by the Nomination Court for a late submission.
According to VOA Zimbabwe on Wednesday, Valerio becomes the only woman presidential aspirant in a field of 11 men, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change.
Valerio said, “I’m happy that we have been allowed to get into the presidential race. I will be the only woman presidential candidate. That’s very good news for Zimbabweans.”
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) refused to accept her nomination papers claiming that she submitted them late at the Nomination Court.
Meanwhile, the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change says ZEC has given political parties unusable copies of the voters’ roll. The party says they need an electronic copy of the voters’ register.
There are now 12 candidates for the presidency with the election to be held on 23 August.
