Nigeria - Kano State on Monday dismissed rumours of mass death in Kano, following rising activities on cemeteries in the metropolis.

Health Educator and Secretary of Risk Communication Sub-Committee on COVID-19 Auwalu Abdu Fagge, in a statement, said “this particular rumour has been investigated and found to be false.”
Fagge said “the task force has activated community informants’ structure of WHO to report death and cause of death and have deployed officers to burial grounds to count bodies … (the workers would conduct two shifts).”
Government’s reaction followed panic by residents on unexplained death in the last three days.
Attendants and undertakers at Dandolo Cemetery in Goron Dutse told reporters that 61 bodies were buried between Saturday and Sunday.
Similarly, at the Gyadi-gyadi Cemetery at Court Road, 31 were buried on Saturday.
The Farm Centre Cemetery also witnessed 27 burials on Saturday.
Abattoir Cemetery at Kofar Mazugal, 13 people from Zango Quarters were burial in the last three days.
Between Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Chedi, Ciromawa, Dorayi, Sharifai, Zage, many people were buried at the Abattoir Cemetery, and eight yesterday at Kulkul quarters in the city.
Fagge appealed to residents to “disregard the rumours of mass deaths in Kano metropolis.”
According to him, “honestly, the media and rumour mongers have been …making us dispense energy in wading them off.”
He promised “we cannot afford to let the people to panic and lose confidence in our response. I must state that we are more courageous than ever to contain this pandemic.”
Former Governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, yesterday, donated the Amana Hospital to the government to boost its fight against COVID-19.
A statement by the senator’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, said the contribution would assist the “Management Committee overcome this epidemic.”
Hassan said the newly built hospital was equipped with 60-beds, and completed last month.
It is on Miller Road, Bompai, and yet to be inaugurated.
