Nigeria - One person has been confirmed dead as residents of Amawbia in Awka South local government area of Anambra State fled during a petrol tanker explosion on Tuesday, The Nation reports.
The incident happened at about 3.20pm, creating tension in the area,along Enugu -Onitsha expressway.
Police Commissioner, John Abang and other security agencies had cordoned off the area to prevent any further disaster.
Also, the men of the fire service in the state, led by their Director, Agility were on hand to quell the fire.
However, as at the time of filling the report , only one casualty was recorded while no property had been confirmed destroyed.
The Police Public Relation’s Officer, Haruna Mohammed,who confirmed the incident, said security agencies and fire service were working hard to make sure no such thing happened.
A bystander, who spoke with The Nation, said:” We have not been able to record some casualties except the welder because the fire is still raging.

“But you know the place is a kind of cluster of mechanic workshops. So, your guess is as good as mine.”
The PPRO said: “A Tanker has just exploded inside a mechanic workshop at Amawbia bypass ,Enugu Onitsha Expressway Awka.
“The fire is still ragging. It is highly advisable you alert residents in the area through your medium to steer clear from the premises in order to prevent any disaster”
“The Commissioner of Police, John Abang, has visited the scene and police patrol teams have cordoned off the Area.Fire Service department was equally contacted.”
