Eight children have been killed in an attack at a primary school in China on their first day of a new term.
Two others were injured in the incident which happened at around 8am on Monday in Chaoyangpo village, in Enshi city, in eastern Hubei province.
Police said a 40-year-old man was in custody and being questioned over the attack.
No details about how the children died have been released and the motive is unclear.
The Guangzhou-based Southern Weekly reported the suspect was released from prison last June after serving a sentence for attempted murder.
Two children were stabbed to death by a man outside a primary school in Shanghai in June last year.
And in April 2018, nine were killed and more than a dozen injured outside a middle school in north-western Shaanxi province, in an attack allegedly carried out by a former pupil in revenge for being bullied.
