WORLD NEWS: US Election 2016 - Trump Intensifies Feud With Fox's Megyn Kelly

Donald Trump has stepped up his feud with Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly as he stands by his decision to shun Thursday night's presidential debate on the cable network.

The Republican White House front-runner has been pitting his Twitter megaphone against America's most popular conservative media outlet in the court of public opinion over his high-stakes boycott.
Mr Trump fired off a volley of tweets on Thursday morning targeting the news channel and Ms Kelly.

One post featured an image from a raunchy 2010 magazine photoshoot featuring the news anchor with the comment: "And this is the bimbo that's asking presidential questions?"

Ms Kelly, who will be one of the moderators at Thursday night's debate, has avoided taking the bait at Mr Trump's digs.

The real estate billionaire stunned the Republican Party with his bombshell announcement on Tuesday that he would skip the forum in Des Moines, Iowa.

His Fox feud dates back to the first Republican primary debate, when moderator Ms Kelly took Mr Trump to task over derogatory statements he'd made in the past about women.

His no-show comes days before Iowans vote to pick Republican and Democratic candidates to be their party's nominee in this November's presidential election.

Mr Trump said that instead of attending the televised forum he would hold a rally for wounded warriors.

He appeared briefly on Fox News on Wednesday night, signalling he was not shunning the channel altogether.

Anchor Bill O'Reilly attempted to persuade him to change his mind about the debate.

O'Reilly told his old friend: "I bought you so many vanilla milkshakes, you owe me ... Will you just reconsider?"

But Mr Trump, 69, refused to budge.

His Republican rivals are welcoming the opportunity to emerge from the long shadow the billionaire has cast over the race.

The onetime reality TV star's absence is likely to focus tonight’s attention on Texas Senator Ted Cruz, with whom he is locked in a tight race in the Midwestern state of Iowa.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Mr Bush, Ohio Governor John Kasich, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul will also take to the main stage.

Analysts are split over whether Mr Trump's boycott is a stroke of genius or hubris.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan skipped the first televised Republican debate ever, a decision his staff blamed for his subsequent loss in Iowa.

But he went on to win a landslide general election.
