WORLD NEWS: BELARUS - NIGERIA; Nigeria wins bid to manage Belarus’s satellite for 15 years


Nigeria has made history in the global space technology market by becoming the first country in the Sub-Sahara Africa to manage a foreign satellite.

This followed the emergence of Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) limited, the operator of NigComSat-R, the Nigerian Communication Satellite as the winner of a bidding process to provide In-Orbit test (IOT) and carrier Spectrum Monitoring (CSM) services for Belintersat-1 Satellite.

NEWS: NIGERIA - Buhari to spend N18.1 billion on Presidential Villa


Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari apparently plans to spend more money than his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan to run the presidential villa in the capital Abuja. If approved by the National Assembly, the Nigerian leader will spend 18.1 billion naira (about $91 million) on the State House in 2016, which is 11.5 billion naira more than what Jonathan’s administration spent this year and 5.9 billion naira more than the amount spent in 2014, according to Nigeria’s Premium Times newspaper, which cited details from the proposed 2016 budget.

NEWS: NIGERIA - Road crashes reduced by 33 per cent during Christmas — FRSC


The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has said that road crashes across the country was reduced by 33 per cent during the Christmas period.

This is contained in a statement by Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy in the commission and made available to journalists on Monday in Abuja.

The US space agency Nasa has warned that the effects of the current El Nino weather phenomenon could be as bad as those of 1998, the strongest on record.

A five-mile (8km) section of the Mississippi River near St Louis, Missouri, has been closed to vessels as rising water levels caused "hazardous conditions", the US Coast Guard said.

Storms and tornadoes have lashed the region in recent days, swelling rivers and causing flash flooding.

A U.S. aircraft carrier came within about 1,500 yards of an Iranian rocket while operating in the Strait of Hormuz, a Pentagon official told CNN.
