MTN and Airtel face House Committee, explain reasons for sacking workers

Nigeria - MTN and Airtel Nigeria have explained why the sacked workers in the recent restructuring of the organisations.

The two companies told the House Committee on Telecommunications, chaired by Rep Saheed Fijabi (APC, Oyo), yesterday that some of the staff were disengaged due to inability to fit into the new technological developments.

Nigeria - The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed the payment of the N30 billion fine paid by MTN.

According to NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, MTN has paid N30 billion ($98 million, 92 million euros) as part of the fine.

South African telecoms giant MTN has paid nearly $100 million of a $1.7 billion fine for failing to disconnect unregistered SIM cards in Nigeria, officials said on Friday.

“MTN has paid 30 billion naira ($98 million, 92 million euros) as part of the fine,” Tony Ojobo, spokesman for Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) told AFP.

“The payment is in furtherance of the agreed timetable for payment of the total fine.”

MTN set to pay N30b fine to FG by March 31

Nigeria - Barring any unforeseen circumstances, telecommunications firm, MTN is expected to pay N30 billion in the next eight days, as part of the N330 billion fine it is currently paying to the Federal Government.

Government had confirmed the earlier payment of N80 billion to its coffers in December last year, as part of the fine, which has been staggered till 2019.

Nigeria - The Federal High Court in Ibadan on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 has awarded N530,000 to one Oluwole Aluko for unauthorised deduction from his lines by MTN Nigeria.

Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel who passed the judgement, held that MTN had found itself guilty by not challenging the suit.
