Several killed as Storm Ophelia slams Ireland

The remnants of Hurricane Ophelia slammed into Ireland with wind gusts of up to 80 mph (130 kph) on Monday, killing at least three people, grounding planes, shutting schools and causing widespread power outages.


Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar urged people to stay indoors until the storm passed. Tens of thousands of homes were without power and the military was placed on standby. Some hurricane-force gusts were reported 30 years to the day after a weather event dubbed the "Great Storm of 1987" battered southern England.

Sad! Five bodies found with helicopter wreckage in Snowdonia

The bodies of five people have been found with the wreckage of a helicopter following a search in Snowdonia.
North Wales Police said they would not be revealing the precise location "at this time to allow a dignified and unhindered recovery of the bodies".
A statement added that the terrain was "described as very difficult and challenging".

The search was launched after the coastguard lost radar contact with the helicopter at 4.15pm


The Coastguard is searching for a helicopter which has gone missing over the Irish Sea with five people on board.
The operation was launched after the twin squirrel red helicopter went missing on Wednesday afternoon.
The privately owned helicopter is understood to have left Milton Keynes on Wednesday en route to Dublin, via Caernarfon Bay.

The 27-year-old defender is thought to have died at home on Sunday evening.
The Irish FA tweeted: "Thoughts tonight with the family of Ryan McBride and everyone involved with @derrycityfc."

Three men missing since their search and rescue helicopter crashed off the west coast of Ireland may be strapped in their seats in the wreckage.
The Irish Coastguard, which is co-ordinating the search from Blacksod Lighthouse in County Mayo, said it suspected the crew members could still be on board.
Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, 45, a long-serving search and rescue pilot, was located in the water but pronounced dead in hospital.

An Irishman and Frenchwoman have been rescued after their yacht's rudder broke, leaving them stranded in the rough Tasman Sea.
The pair were sailing from New Zealand to Australia when the rudder broke on Saturday, followed by the 20ft yacht capsizing several times before they activated an emergency beacon on Tuesday.

Oh my word! Infants' remains found at former mother and baby home in Ireland

"Significant quantities of human remains" have been found at a former mother and baby home in Ireland.
A commission investigating alleged abuse at religious-run institutions has been excavating a site in Tuam, Co Galway, where the remains of 796 infants are believed to be buried.
The Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes said it was "shocked" after finding remains in at least 17 of 20 underground chambers it has been examining.
