Hurricane maria lashes Dominican Republic

Hurricane Maria thrashed parts of the Dominican Republic with heavy rain and high winds as it passed off its east coast on Thursday after making a direct hit on Puerto Rico.

This has caused severe flooding and cut power to almost all the island. Hurricane Maria has killed at least 10 people as it raged through the Caribbean region, the second major hurricane to do so this month.

The Dominican church was allegedly swallowed by water several decades ago but was recently exposed as a result of severe drought that dried up the lake where the temple had submerged.

Three men have been arrested after two journalists were killed during a live radio broadcast in the Dominican Republic.

One of the journalists was filming his show on Facebook Live when he was shot.

The footage showed his broadcast interrupted by gunfire and a panicked woman shouting "Shots! Shots! Shots!".

A newspaper in the Dominican Republic has had to apologise to readers after it mistakenly used a photo of Alec Baldwin impersonating Donald Trump instead of the US President himself.

The Hollywood actor, wearing a blond wig in his guise as the American leader on comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL), appeared next to an image of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
