A delegation of African leaders and senior officials arrived in Ukraine to address the ongoing war with Russia and secure food and fertilizer supplies for their continent. Despite facing challenges, an air raid in Kyiv during their visit served as a reminder of the situation's gravity.
The delegation, which included the presidents of South Africa, Senegal, Zambia, and the Comoros Islands, visited Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv known for the brutality inflicted by Russian troops during their invasion.
The delegation planned to attend an economic conference in St. Petersburg and meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, consisting of senior officials from Uganda, Egypt, the Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Zambia, Senegal, and Comoros.
While in Bucha, the visitors placed commemorative candles at a small memorial outside St. Andrew’s Church, near one of the locations where a mass grave was unearthed.
Shortly after, air raid sirens began to wail in Ukraine’s capital. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported an explosion in the Podilskiy district, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods.
“Russian missiles are a message to Africa: Russia wants more war, not peace,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted.
The Ukrainian air force said it shot down six Russian Kalibr cruise missiles, six Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missiles and two reconnaissance drones. It gave no details on where they were shot down.
