The Portuguese boss enjoyed a relatively successful debut campaign at Old Trafford last term as he guided the Red Devils to Europa League and EFL Cup glory.
However, in the league they finished a disappointing sixth - a staggering 24 points behind Champions Chelsea.
But former United defender Ferdinand believes the club are on the right track with Mourinho at the helm after enduring a difficult few seasons under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman came in for plenty of criticism during his tenure for his tactics and lack of attacking football.
"For what he [Mourinho] was asked to do you got to say he was a success," Ferdinand said.
"But finishing sixth, when you look at it like that, and you didn't have all the other stuff, you would say it would be a disappointing season.
"I think this is a season where he gets a little bit of respite and it's time to continue and build.
"I definitely think there's been an improvement in the way the team's played. The idea of going to Old Trafford isn't boring like it was for the last couple of years.
"I didn't enjoy watching Manchester United the last couple of years. This season has been better, so you hope that will continue."
United begin their Premier League 2017/18 season with the visit of West Ham on August 12.
