Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has condemned the partial reinstatement of US President, Donald Trump’s travel ban, noting that the decision will energize terrorists.
The ban is “the biggest gift for extremist groups,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in Berlin on Tuesday after meeting his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel.
The US apex court ruling had reinstated Trump’s travel ban targeting citizens from six mainly Muslim countries – Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
In his reaction, Trump said the unanimous Supreme Court decision “is a clear victory for our national security.”
But Zarif said the development would force terrorists to do more harm.
“It is regrettable that the citizens of the countries on the list have never participated in any act of terrorism against the U.S. and yet they are being punished for acts of terrorism,” he said.
In an apparent reference to Saudi Arabia, Zarif said the travel ban punishes people who have never been “involved in terrorism”, while citizens of other countries involved in past terrorist acts were not affected.
Trump’s revised executive order halts entry to the US for affected counties for 90 days.
The President maintains that the steps were necessary in order to revise security screening to safeguard the nation from external threats.
