One soldier has died and another has been seriously injured in a shooting at RAF Tain near Inverness, sources report.
One of our source reported that both were Army soldiers.
Police have reportedly sealed off part of a bombing range used by the RAF and Army for training exercises.
The base has a rifle range and a small arms range, as well as bombing ranges.
An Army spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident at the Tain base, near Inverness.
"We will release more information as and when it becomes available. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this point."
Police were called shortly before 6pm on Tuesday.
RAF Tain is used by the US Air Force and NATO air forces as well as British forces.
However, the range is mostly used by Typhoons and Tornados from RAF Lossiemouth.
The shooting comes months after Private Conor McPherson, 24, died while taking part in a night-time live firing exercise at a training facility in Northumberland in August.
The soldier, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, suffered a serious head wound after being shot at the Otterburn training area.
