A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Thursday in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
No life was lost in the incident which occurred at Nibo Street, Abakaliki.
The state Commissioner for Environment, Chief Moses Nome, said the owner of the building and site engineer who have not been traced, would be arrested and prosecuted.
“They violated the state’s building construction provisions. We have directed that those erecting buildings should contact relevant government officials with their building plans,” the commissioner said at the scene of the incident on Thursday.
He noted that the building collapsed due to poor quality of work and materials used by contractors handling the project.
“We discovered that eight and 12 millimetre (mm) rods were used to construct the building instead of 16 and 20mm. The space between the rods used for the ‘decking’ is about eight inches instead of 6 inches,” Nome added.
He said the owner would be directed to pull down the remaining structure and evacuate the debris because it poses danger to people of the area.
The Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Evang. Ephraim Ononye, condemned the poor design and materials used for the building.
